This article traces how the idea of social justice evolved from early human practices of care to a global political ideal. Empathy and mutual aid are ancient, evident both in theory and in practice since the dawn of humanity, and institutions extending care beyond kinship networks are at least as old as writing. Yet the modern conception of social justice emerged with Enlightenment thought, rising prosperity, and the upheavals of industrialization, and has since been reshaped by diverse cultu
