In 2024, Africa’s bilateral trade with China reached a record volume of $275 billion, with $182 billion in imports (6.3% of regional GDP) and $93 billion in exports (3.2% of regional GDP). Driven by a larger increase in exports, especially in extractives, Africa’s trade deficit with China dropped slightly from $91.9 billion 2023 to $89.6 billion in 2024 (3.1% of regional GDP) (Figure 1). China accounted for 16 percent of Africa’s total exports and 28 percent of total imports.
