Regular school attendance has long been considered fundamental to student learning. Students’ reports of school absences have been collected in TIMSS since the 2015 cycle and have consistently shown strong relationships with achievement in mathematics and science. Students who report rarely or never being absent from school show higher achievement in both subjects than students who report more frequent absences, across countries and assessment cycles.1,2,3,4 The TIMSS 2023 Longitudinal Study
