The need for rangers is growing rapidly. There are currently about 286,000 state rangers working in terrestrial protected areas worldwide. This is far short of what is considered necessary. It is estimated that 1.5 million rangers (from a wide range of conservation governance types) will be needed to effectively conserve 30 per cent of the planet by 2030,1 as outlined in Target 3 of the Convention on Biological Diversity’s Global Biodiversity Framework.2 Ranger roles are also changing (see gl
