The surface is composed of sand and must be level. It must not be rough and must be free of pebbles, shells or any other objects that could injure the players, the match officials or any other person. For international competitions, the sand must be fine and at least 40cm deep. It must be sifted until suitable for play; however, it must not be so fine as to cause dust that sticks to the skin.
